I work on the politics of identity and institutions in nationally diverse states. My research is about why people commit to mere stories enough to, in the extreme, pick up arms against one another.

I have published on nationalist mobilization and conflict, territorial autonomy, constitutional reform, secession, political economy of territorial redistribution and fiscal federalism, business and democracy, and the politics of time and events.
